“If ye then, being evil, know how to give good gifts unto your children, how much more shall your Father which is in heaven give good things to them that ask him?” — Matthew 7:11
In life, it is common to face overwhelming situations beyond our control. It can be challenging to stay motivated and avoid burnout in such circumstances. However, turning our gaze away from the challenges and focusing on God can provide us with the strength and peace we need to face whatever comes our way. One of the most effective ways of doing so is by cultivating an attitude of gratitude and expressing thankfulness to God for all He has done on our behalf, such as…
- Waking up to a new day
- A kindness or financial provision that was unexpected
- Beautiful weather
- Healing from illness
- Utilities and transportation
- Time with friends and family
- An enjoyable meal
The list of things to be thankful for is endless!
It is essential to approach God with a grateful heart, acknowledging all the good things He has already given us. We should not just ask for things as if He is Santa Claus. Instead, we should offer up thanksgiving for every small and significant blessing in our lives, from waking up to a new day to spending time with loved ones, enjoying a good meal, or being healed from an illness. When we focus on God’s goodness, we are reminded that He is in control and that everything is ultimately in His hands. This realization helps us let go of our anxieties and trust in Him.
An attitude of gratitude has a direct connection to experiencing inward peace. The more grateful we are, the less anxious we will be. A grateful heart can also help us stay motivated and content, no matter the circumstances. One way to cultivate this attitude is by keeping a gratitude journal. Each day, we can write down at least three things we are thankful for, and then pause to express our gratitude to God. Over time, this practice can help us develop a habit of thankfulness, which will ultimately lead to a more peaceful and fulfilling life.
In prayer, we can also express our gratitude to God. We can thank Him for all the blessings He has poured into our lives, recognizing that they are beyond counting. Our greatest blessing is our relationship with Him, and the fact that we can call Him our Father is simply incredible. But beyond that, He has given us so much more. We should ask for His forgiveness for the times we have been ungrateful, and for focusing more on what we don’t have rather than what we do have.
It is not uncommon to feel discouraged or burnt out when things are beyond our control. However, we can avoid worry and anxiety by focusing on God and expressing gratitude for all He has done for us. When we turn our attention to God’s goodness, we are reminded that He is in control, and that we do not need to worry about the things that are outside of our control. We can trust Him to provide for us and take care of us.
One of the best ways to avoid worry and anxiety is by developing a grateful heart. When we focus on the good things in our lives, we are more likely to find joy and contentment, even in difficult circumstances. A grateful heart can also help us stay motivated and avoid burnout. We should make it a habit to express gratitude to God for everything, from the small daily provisions to the more significant blessings in our lives.
It is important to note that developing an attitude of gratitude is not always easy, especially when facing difficult circumstances. However, we can trust that God will help us develop this habit if we ask Him. We can pray for His help in cultivating a grateful heart and staying focused on His goodness, even in the midst of trials and challenges.
Gratitude is a powerful antidote to worry and anxiety. When we focus on God’s goodness and express gratitude for all He has done for us, we are reminded that He is in control, and that we can trust Him to provide for us and take care of us. We should make it a habit to express thanksgiving to God every day, even for the small things in our lives. Developing a grateful heart will ultimately lead to a more peaceful, fulfilling, and joyful life.
Let’s Pray
Dear Father, thank you for all the amazing blessings you have poured into my life. They are beyond counting! The greatest blessing that I have is my relationship with you. The fact that I can call you my Father is simply incredible.
But beyond that, you’ve given me so much more. Forgive me for all the times I’ve been more focused on what I don’t have than what I do have. Forgive me for being ungrateful despite having received so very much.
Today, I am choosing gratefulness over anxiety. I’m choosing to be grateful for all I’ve been given instead of unhappy about what I wish I had. Fill me with a grateful heart today. In Jesus’ name, amen.
